Janitor AI and Character AI are both strong picks if you enjoy AI characters, roleplay, and story-based chats. We tested the two platforms ourselves, talked to different characters, created our own, and spent enough time in longer conversations to see where each service works best.
We liked both, but they don’t feel the same. Janitor AI is more focused on flexible text roleplay, detailed replies, and fewer content restrictions. Character AI has grown into a broader entertainment platform with chat, voice features, images, video tools, Scenes, different chat styles, and a huge character library.
Our scores are close: Character AI gets 9.3/10, while Janitor AI gets 9.1/10. That small gap doesn’t mean Character AI is always better. It depends on how you want to use your AI character.

- Character AI uses its CAI-Image models for tools such as Imagine and Imagine Message. AvatarFX can turn an image into an animated video, while Character Calls adds spoken conversations.

Janitor AI vs Character AI Chat: Which Feels Better?
We had good conversations on both platforms, though the style was different.
Janitor AI works best when we give the bot a clear scenario and enough detail. Replies can be long and descriptive, which fits fantasy, romance, adventure, and other story-heavy chats. The platform offers JanitorLLM and also gives more advanced users access to other model routes.
Character AI takes a different approach with Chat Styles. Free options include PipSqueak 3 for general roleplay and ShortSqueak for shorter replies. Premium users can access styles such as DeepSqueak and LongSqueak.
Creators also get a Character Definition field of up to 32,000 characters for personality, backstory, speech, behavior, and dialogue examples.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Memory and Story Continuity
Memory matters much more once a chat gets longer. A character can feel convincing at first, then ruin the story by forgetting something important.
- Janitor AI has made longer memory one of the main reasons to consider Janitor+. The paid plan offers 5x more context, giving the model more room to hold earlier events and details. Recent captures of Janitor’s help information put the standard context at around 9,000 tokens.
- Character AI uses several memory tools instead of one clear context number. Lorebooks can store details about locations, relationships, side characters, rules, or other parts of a fictional world. Entries activate when their keywords appear in chat.
The platform also offers user-controlled chat memories and automated memory features on paid plans.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Character Customization
Both platforms give us plenty of room to create very different characters.
- Janitor AI lets us shape personality, scenario, history, behavior, opening messages, and roleplay instructions. Personas are useful too, since we can decide who we are in a specific story.
- Character AI also goes deep. We can choose a name, tagline, description, avatar, greeting, voice, tags, and visibility settings. The Character Definition adds space for personality, relationships, speech patterns, rules, and example dialogue. We can also upload an avatar or generate one from a description, then use that visual with image and video tools.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Image Generation
This part of the comparison is much easier.
- Janitor AI supports character images, and its mobile app includes a Media Library for uploading and organizing visual content. Still, the main roleplay experience doesn’t have a full built-in image generator comparable to Character AI.
- Character AI does. Its CAI-Image models power Imagine, Imagine Message, Comics, and other visual features. Users can work with different styles, reference images, multiple characters, poses, camera directions, and character consistency.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Voice and Video Features
- Janitor AI is still mainly built around text. It doesn’t have a native voice call system or AI video feature comparable to Character AI.
- Character Voice is available for free. Users can choose community voices or create one from an audio sample. Character Calls adds two-way spoken conversations, and the transcript is saved as text afterward. AvatarFX can also turn an image into a talking, moving AI video. Character AI currently promotes AvatarFX access for c.ai+ members, though availability can depend on the platform and rollout.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Roleplay and Content Flexibility
- Roleplay is where Janitor AI makes a strong case. The platform is designed for adults and allows mature themes, although it can still moderate, filter, or refuse content when required. Paying for Janitor+ doesn’t remove those rules.
- Character AI is stricter. Romance, fantasy, action, villains, and fandom stories are allowed, but pornographic content is prohibited and filters can limit certain requests. We still had strong roleplay sessions on Character AI. Its newer models kept scenes moving well and didn’t constantly fall back into generic small talk.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Pricing
Both services let us test the core experience for free.
| JANITOR AI | CHARACTER AI |
| Free version: Core chat, standard context, character access | Free version: Unlimited messages, basic memory and chat styles |
| Janitor+: $12.99/month 5x context, priority messages, stronger model swipes | c.ai lite: From $4.99/month Premium messages each day, fewer ads, better memory |
| c.ai+: $9.99/month Premium chat styles, best memory, no ads, priority features | |
| c.ai+ Annual: $94.99/year Same premium tier at a lower yearly rate |
- Janitor+ costs $12.99 per month and adds more context, priority responses, and stronger model swipes.
- Character AI says free messaging remains unlimited. c.ai lite starts at $4.99 per month in the US, while c.ai+ costs $9.99 monthly or $94.99 per year. Regional prices can differ.
Janitor AI vs Character AI User Experience
- Character AI felt easier to understand from the start. Search, character profiles, chat, voice tools, images, and creation menus all sit inside one polished interface. We could start chatting without spending much time on settings.
- Janitor AI feels a little more technical. There are more choices around the actual roleplay experience, which regular AI chat users may appreciate, but beginners may need more time to get comfortable. Official Janitor AI apps are now available on iOS and Android, although its Google Play listing still describes the Android version as beta.
Janitor AI vs Character AI Privacy and User Data
Privacy is one area where we’d read the settings carefully.
- Character AI says it collects account details, interaction data, and technical information. Its documentation explains that text and interaction data may be used to improve its models. People in the EEA and UK can turn off Improve the Model for Everyone, which stops new chat content from being used for generative AI model training. Users can also export data or delete an account. Character creators can’t read private chats other users have with their bots.
- Janitor AI’s privacy policy includes characters, chat conversations, messages, and other user content among the data it collects. Recent versions also mention research and development of AI systems. Its Google Play disclosure says data is encrypted in transit and users can request deletion. If a Janitor AI chat runs through an outside model provider, that company may process the conversation under its own privacy policy too.
Who Should Choose Janitor AI or Character AI?
- Long-form roleplayers. Its descriptive replies work well for ongoing stories.
- Users who want more content freedom. Adult roleplay is less restricted.
- People who like model control. Advanced users get more choice over how chats are generated.
- Text-first users. Voice and video aren’t necessary if writing is your priority.
- Story writers. Personas and longer context fit continuing fictional plots.
- Users who want more than text. Voice, calls, images, and video add more ways to interact.
- Casual chat users. Shorter chat styles work well for quick conversations.
- World builders. Lorebooks help track places, rules, and supporting characters.
- Visual creators. Imagine and CAI-Image add a visual layer to stories.
- Beginners. It’s easy to start even if you’ve never built an AI character before.
Janitor AI vs Character AI: Which One Should You Choose?
We enjoyed both platforms, and we’d happily return to either one. We’d pick Janitor AI for text-heavy roleplay, longer stories, model flexibility, and fewer content limits. Its narrower focus works well when we want to stay with one story for a long time. Character AI would be our choice for a broader experience. The chat is strong, but voice, calls, images, Lorebooks, Scenes, and video give us more ways to use the same character.
That wider toolkit is why Character AI finishes slightly ahead at 9.3/10. Janitor AI is close behind at 9.1/10.
Before paying, we’d ask one simple question: what are we actually going to use most? For longer and more flexible text roleplay, Janitor AI makes more sense. For chat mixed with voice and visual features, Character AI is the stronger fit.
