Candy AI and Character.AI both gave us good results during testing, but they’re built for different kinds of users. Candy AI puts more attention on creating a personal companion with a specific look, personality, voice, photos, and videos. Character.AI feels much broader. It gives us a huge choice of characters, stronger story tools, and more room to experiment with different personalities and fictional worlds.
Neither platform felt weak to us. We enjoyed using both, just for different reasons. Candy AI makes more sense if visual customization and companion-style chats matter most. Character.AI is better for free chatting, character variety, memory controls, and longer roleplay sessions.
We’d give Candy AI 9.1/10 and Character.AI 9.3/10. The scores are close because this really comes down to what you want from an AI companion.

Candy AI vs Character.AI: What’s the Main Difference?
The biggest difference became clear pretty early in our tests. Candy AI is built mainly around one-to-one AI companionship. Character.AI feels more like a large platform for characters, stories, fandoms, and roleplay.
- want control over both appearance and personality;
- care about AI photos and short videos;
- prefer romantic or more flexible private roleplay;
- want chat, voice, and visual tools in one place;
- don’t mind paying for a subscription and using tokens for some media features.
- want to chat a lot without paying;
- like trying many community-made characters;
- prefer longer stories and detailed roleplay;
- want more control over what a character remembers;
- care about having voice calls without a premium plan.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Chat & Conversation
Candy AI doesn’t make the chat experience complicated. We could pick an existing character or create one with the personality we wanted, then start talking almost immediately. Characters are designed to adapt to our tone, preferences, and earlier conversations over time.
We liked that simplicity. It worked especially well for everyday chatting, flirting, and relationship-style conversations. Images, voice features, and videos are also tied closely to the chat, so switching from text to another format feels natural.
Character.AI gives us more control over the style of the replies. Its current options include free chat styles such as PipSqueak 3, made for general roleplay, and ShortSqueak, which keeps responses shorter and more casual. Paid plans also include additional styles such as DeepSqueak and LongSqueak.
We actually liked being able to change this. Sometimes a quick answer was exactly what we wanted. In a longer roleplay, though, the more detailed styles worked much better.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Memory & Conversation Continuity
- Candy AI says its companions learn from conversations and remember things such as preferences, interests, tone, and personal details shared during chats. In our sessions, that helped conversations feel more connected instead of starting from zero each time.
The system mostly works in the background. Candy AI doesn’t publicly give us a simple context-window figure or the same kind of detailed memory controls found on Character.AI. - Character.AI gives us much more to work with manually. There’s Story Memory, which lets important events and details stay available. c.ai+ users can also use automatically collected Facts about Personas, Characters, and side characters. These can be edited or turned off. Memory Usage shows what currently takes up memory, while saved Story Memories stay protected when older chat context gets condensed.
Memory pins are another useful option. The current comparison lists 15 pins for free users and 30 for Lite and c.ai+ members. Advanced Lorebooks give c.ai+ users another way to save information about a world and bring it into the chat when matching keywords appear.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Character Customization
Both platforms have strong character tools, though they focus on very different parts of creation.
- Candy AI gives us plenty of visual choices. We can adjust things such as age range, hair, eye color, hairstyle, body characteristics, personality, hobbies, and voice. Realistic and anime characters are both available, which can completely change the look of the companion.
- Character.AI goes deeper into who the character is rather than how they look. Creators can set the name, avatar, greeting, voice, tags, description, and a detailed Character Definition. That Definition can be up to 32,000 characters long. It can cover background, personality, speech style, behavior, emotional responses, and other instructions. Creators can also add several greetings and choose or make voices.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Image Generation
- Image generation is one of the areas where Candy AI really stood out during our testing. It supports both realistic and anime images. We can pick or create a character, write a prompt, and generate between 1 and 16 images at once. It’s also possible to request images from inside the chat, which makes the results feel connected to the conversation instead of coming from a separate generator. We liked this setup a lot. Asking for a picture during a conversation felt more natural than leaving the chat and opening another tool.
- Character.AI has been building out its visual features too. Imagine can turn moments from chats into pictures, and Imagine Gallery keeps previous creations together. There’s also an avatar generator and Comics, which can create illustrated stories in Japanese, American, Black & White, Chibi, or custom styles. Extra generations can use Character.AI’s Charm currency.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Voice & Video
There’s quite a lot beyond text on both platforms now.
- Candy AI gives Premium users character voice messages and live AI phone calls. The current call screen lists a beta price of 3 tokens per minute. There are also Scene Videos. A character can make a 5-second video based on the current scene, with the interface currently showing a price of 12 tokens.
- Character.AI handles voice differently. Character Voice is free for everyone, and we can use an existing voice or create one from an audio sample. Two-way Character Calls are also available, including through the web version. After the call, the conversation is saved as a text transcript. Creators can also generate short introduction videos from a character avatar. These are mainly profile and storytelling features rather than the kind of private scene videos Candy AI creates during chats.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Roleplay & Content Flexibility
We had a good time roleplaying on both services, though the experience felt quite different.
- Candy AI is particularly suited to personal, romantic, relationship-based, and fantasy scenarios. The service also allows adult-oriented conversations and generated content within its platform rules, so adult users have more flexibility in private chats. There are still prohibited categories, of course.
- Character.AI has stricter limits around explicit material. Its policy says that pornographic content isn’t supported. For regular roleplay, though, Character.AI has a lot going for it. Character Definitions, Personas, Scenes, memory features, chat styles, and Lorebooks make it easier to keep track of characters, settings, events, and rules as a story grows.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Pricing
The two services take very different approaches to payment.
| Plan | Price | Main Features |
| Candy AI Free | $0 | Usually up to 5 messages |
| Candy AI Premium – 1 month | $13.99 | Unlimited texts, custom companions, media tools, 100 monthly tokens |
| Candy AI Premium – 3 months | $26.97 total | $8.99/month equivalent |
| Candy AI Premium – 12 months | $47.88 total | $3.99/month equivalent |

| Character.AI Lite | From $4.99/month in the US | Premium chat allowance, fewer ads, better memory |
| Character.AI c.ai+ | $9.99/month | Unlimited premium chats, no ads, full memory tools and other benefits |
- uses tokens for some media features as well. Premium members currently receive 100 tokens per month. According to its terms, free users can generally send no more than five messages before they need paid access.
- Character.AI is much easier to use for free if text chat is the main priority. Standard messages stay unlimited. Lite starts from $4.99 per month in the US, while c.ai+ costs $9.99 per month. Prices can vary by region.
Candy AI vs Character.AI User Experience
- Candy AI was quicker for us to figure out. We picked a companion, opened the chat, and most of the important tools were right there. Image and video requests also connect closely to the conversation, so we didn’t spend much time jumping between sections.
- Character.AI feels busier. There are Characters, Personas, chat styles, memory settings, voices, Imagine, Comics, Lorebooks, Stories, and community tools. Finding new characters is a much bigger part of the platform too.
That can feel like a lot at first, but we didn’t see it as a bad thing. Once we knew where everything was, Character.AI gave us more ways to experiment. Candy AI stayed simpler and more focused.
Candy AI vs Character.AI Privacy & Data
For privacy, we’d look past the marketing pages and read the actual policies before sharing anything personal.
- Candy AI’s Privacy Notice was revised on July 30, 2026. It says conversation prompts, generated outputs, and other interaction data may be processed. Interactions can also be aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified for model development and research. Creating training datasets may involve human review of de-identified or anonymized interactions. The policy also covers deletion rights and explains how account-related personal data may be kept after account activity unless deletion is requested or another legal reason applies.
- Character.AI also says user-generated content may be kept and used to train or improve its models. Its current training settings allow eligible users to turn off future chat-content use for generative AI training. The help page specifically explains this option for users in the EEA and UK. Users can also delete an account and request data exports. Character creators can’t read the private conversations other people have with their Characters.
Who Should Choose Candy AI or Character.AI?
- People who care about appearance. The character builder puts much more focus on physical customization.
- Users who want AI images. Generating pictures feels closely connected to the chat.
- You are looking for a multimedia companion. Text, calls, images, and videos all revolve around the same character.
- ou want more flexible roleplay. Candy AI allows a wider range of private relationship scenarios within its rules.
- You are happy to pay annually. At $47.88 for a year, the base Premium subscription works out quite cheaply.
- People who chat a lot. Standard messages are unlimited even without a subscription.
- Roleplayers and writers. Definitions, Story Memory, Facts, Personas, and Lorebooks give longer stories more structure.
- Users who like changing characters. The community library offers a huge range of options.
- People who care about memory controls. There’s more control over which information should stay important.
- Voice users on a budget. Character Voice and Character Calls don’t require c.ai+.
Candy AI vs Character.AI: Which One Should You Choose?
We liked both, and we can see ourselves using them for different reasons.
We’d choose for a more personal companion experience. It gives us better visual customization, easy image generation, private chat, and extra voice and video features tied to the same character.
For general chatting and deeper roleplay, we’d go with Character.AI. The unlimited free messages are hard to ignore, and its large character library, memory controls, chat styles, and story tools give us more freedom to experiment.
If we had to split them into two simple categories, Candy AI would be our pick for multimedia companionship, while Character.AI would win for chat and roleplay.
Before paying for either one, we’d think about how we actually plan to use it. If most of our time will go into chatting and stories, Character.AI offers more for free. If photos, video, voice, and building a personal companion are a big part of the appeal, Candy AI feels like the better fit.
